In order for production facilities to perform efficiently and be profitable, accurate determination of formation fluid composition is essential. To obtain an accurate representation of a formation fluid, it is necessary to retrieve a sample that contains minimal mud-filtrate contamination and remains in a single-phase behavior. The RCI services provide key petrophysical information to determine reservoir volume, fluid producibility, the type and composition of the movable fluids, as well as information to predict reservoir behavior during production.
The combination of the RCI tool with the In-Situ Fluids eXplorerSM (IFXSM) or the SampleViewSM service completes Baker Atlas’ premier formation pressure testing and sampling services, an imperative resource to capturing a reservoir fluid sample required for detailed pressure, volume and temperature (PVT) analysis

Operation
The RCI is a modular formation testing and sampling tool designed to provide a complete description of reservoir fluid type and behavior. The modular capabilities of the RCI enhance the ability to record formation pressures and collect fluid samples in a wide array of geological environments and borehole conditions. Modules include a controlled packer section for variable-volume and variable-rate drawdown, large-volume (885 cc) displacement pumps, multi-tank carriers (2- and 6-tank capacity) for cost-efficient sample recovery, and the IFX and SampleView modules for enhanced downhole fluid characterization. The RCI can also be configured with the straddle packer module for pressure testing and sampling in low-permeability, fractured, and unconsolidated formations; as well as for conducting Mini-DST and Micro-Frac testing for complete rock and fluid characterization. The Formation Rate AnalysisSM (FRASM) is Baker Atlas’ proprietary technique used while pumping for pre-test and gradients, providing a method to validate formation pressure test data and produce a permeability estimate.
Pressure measurements in conjunction with unlimited pre-flush volumes are used to monitor sample cleanup and ensure that a single-phase sample is captured. Sample tanks are maintained at a positive overbalanced pressure to eliminate the risk of sample flashing during the retrieval process. Retrieved samples are over-pressurized downhole to ensure a single-phase sample is transported to the surface.
