Horizontal Oriented Perforating System (HOPS)

Applications

The Horizontal Oriented Perforating™ System (HOPS) perforates long intervals in highly deviated wellbores where orientation of the perforations is desired.

Advantages

  • Free spinning swivel connector design complete with friction-reducing bearing ring
  • Faster makeup time and savings in rigtime costs compared to conventional oriented TCP systems
  • No external orienting lugs used, minimizing chances of guns sticking
  • Reliable, field-proven ballistic transfer method
  • Perforation orientations and shot densities are available for a wide variety of completion applications, including sand control and hydraulic fracturing

Additional Information

The HOPS comprises two main components:

  • Specially phased, eccentrically weighted perforating guns
  • Swivel Gun Connectors to allow rotation of the guns

Special perforating guns, with shaped charges positioned for oriented perforating, contain internal, off-center weights; their position causes the guns to rotate so that the weights are located on the bottom side of the wellbore. The shaped charges are then aligned to shoot the desired orientation into the reservoir.

A Swivel Gun Connector is included at the top of each perforating gun section (but can be used throughout the entire perforating gun system), and allows the perforating gun to freely rotate to establish the necessary orientation, which occurs as the guns enter the deviated section of the wellbore. No further manipulation of the workstring is required.
