FORMpac™ Expandable Packer With Reactive Element Technology

Application

The FORMpac™ Expandable Packer with swelling elastomer eliminates annular flow around liner assemblies. It is a sealing device built on expandable solid pipe technology. The primary activation method for annular sealing is expansion of the solid pipe mandrel. The secondary activation method is the swelling properties of rubber in all hydrocarbons except very lean, single phase gas. This thermodynamic absorption expansion is continuous. It can be used in open hole or perforated casing to isolate unwanted formation or production.

Advantages

  • Robust construction proven to be undamaged by running through long
    horizontal wells and milled windows
  • Provides a simple and effective method to eliminate the linear annular flow of fluids in cased and open holes with maximum pass through ID
  • Will isolate troublesome shale in openhole completions
  • Can be used with both standard and expanding liners and sand control screens
  • No cement required
  • Manufactured on solid pipe mandrel to allow for re-entry and completion packer deployment

Additional Information

Standard procedure is to run the FORMpac™ Expandable Packer with a screen or liner assembly. Once on depth, the bottom hole assembly can be expanded to larger ID, forcing the swelling elastomer to contact the drilled hole or casing. Expansion of the FORMpac™ is accomplished using drillpipe pressure with an expansion system to force a cone through the solid pipe mandrel. The cone can be fixed or adjustable to allow the swelling elastomer to contact irregular shaped wellbores. If production induced washouts occur, the elastomer will absorb hydrocarbon and swell to continuously seal the irregular annular area.
