Horizontal Oriented Perforating System (HOPS)

Horizontal Oriented Perforating System (HOPS)

Horizontal Oriented Perforating System (HOPS) reliably perforates long intervals in highly deviated wellbores where orientation of perforations is critical.

HOPS has been successfully used in highly deviated wells to minimize sand production and avoid oil-water contact. Besides maximizing perforating coverage, HOPS is able to save rig time costs by minimizing the number of perforating runs.

The system is made up of specially phased, eccentrically weighted perforating guns and swivel gun connectors that allow the guns to rotate. Perforating gun sizes from 2-7/8" to 7" OD are available.

The position of the weights causes the guns to rotate so that the weights are located on the bottom-side of the wellbore. As the guns achieve this position, the shaped charges are then aligned to shoot the desired orientation into the reservoir. A Swivel Gun Connector is included at the top of each perforating gun section, and allows the perforating gun to freely rotate to establish the necessary orientation. Orientation of the perforating guns occurs as the guns enter into the deviated section of the wellbore. No further manipulation of the workstring is required. The Swivel Gun Connector can be used throughout the entire perforating gun system.

The HOPS system has several features that improve rig up, reliability and running efficiencies. The free spinning swivel connector design is complete with friction-reducing bearing ring, enabling easy rig up. A faster make-up time, compared to conventional oriented TCP systems, means savings in rig time. No external orienting lugs are used, minimizing the chances of guns sticking. The system includes a reliable, field-proven ballistic transfer method. Perforation orientations and shot densities are available for a wide variety of completion applications, including sand control, and stimulation treatments.
