Deepwater Formation Evaluation - 3DEX

Deepwater Formation Evaluation

3DEXSM Induction Logging Service

Baker Atlas recently introduced a new service, the 3D ExplorerSM Induction Logging Service (3DEXSM), designed to identify and quantify hydrocarbons in laminated, low-resistivity pay formations common in deepwater reservoirs. The new instrument provides more data than traditional resistivity logging measurements for improved petrophysical evaluation.

While standard induction instruments use “Z-axis” coils (indicated above in white) and corresponding eddy currents that flow parallel to the formation bedding, these traditional measurements sense the horizontal resistivity only. This horizontal resistivity is dominated by the high conductivity of the shales and the traditional measurement is insensitive to what you are after - the hydrocarbons of the sands.

The 3DEX instrument introduces additional measurements that force the currents to flow across the bedding and measure a vertical resistivity.
