H2S, Mercaptans, and Iron Sulfides

Sulfides pose a serious risk to oilfield production and can pose a serious threat to the health and safely of our workers, communities, and environment. Sulfides come in several forms, the most serious of which is hydrogen sulfide, or H2S. H2S can react with iron in processing equipment to form iron sulfide. Iron sulfide can deposit in the equipment and accelerate corrosion processes, or can remain suspended and exacerbate water/oil separations. Further downstream, FeS solids can wreak havoc on water injection systems including dramatically upsetting water injectivity.

H2S can be naturally present in the reservoir, or can result from microbial activity stemming from oilfield operations. H2S and iron sulfide problems are often associated with the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria. These bacteria can be found at any point in hydrocarbon process streams - from the reservoir to the injection well or the processing plant or refinery.

Baker Hughes has a suite of products specifically designed to safely and effectively address sulfides in their many forms and all their sources. More information on these products can be found by scrolling down or following the links above.

PETROSWEET™ H2S and Mercaptan Scavengers

Baker Hughes offers comprehensive programs for managing H2S and mercaptans. This involves much more than just supplying a scavenger product. Our technical expertise at diagnosing problems, the ability to provide a complete solution, and our customer-focused service differentiate us from our competitors.

H2S Scavengers for sour oil and sour gas
Baker Hughes considers the threat of H2S as one of the most serious and dangerous in the oilfield today. Our PETROSWEET H2S Scavenger product line has been developed to address the problem of H2S in oil and gas production fluids.

The Baker Hughes Upstream group addresses H2S concerns in these markets:

  • Natural gas production systems
  • Natural gas storage and withdrawal
  • Associated gas operations
  • Crude oil production systems
  • Produced water systems
  • Tail gas
  • Vent gas, fuel gas, and flare gas
  • Vacuum trucks and transportation of sour liquids

Mercaptan Scavengers
Like H2S, mercaptans can be corrosive and have negative safety and economic impacts on production and processing systems. Because of their chemical and structural differences, mercaptans can be much more challenging to scavenge than H2S. PETROSWEET Mercaptan Scavengers were developed to address this challenge in systems containing mercaptans of any molecular weight.

The Baker Hughes Upstream group addresses mercaptan concerns in these markets:

  • Natural gas production systems
  • Crude oil production and handling systems
  • Condensate production and handling systems
  • Polish after MEROX units

ENVIROSWEET™ Sulfide Inhibitor

ENVIROSWEET Inhibitor from Baker Hughes offers the oilfield an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional biocide treatments to control biogenic sulfide production. This product effectively manages bacteria proliferation, but is both non-toxic and biodegradable.

Laboratory studies and field applications have demonstrated the synergistic effects between ENVIROSWEET Inhibitor and conventional biocides. These combination treatments can effectively control microbial corrosion, sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) activity, and water clarity, offering a cost-effective alternative to conventional biocide treatments alone. An ENVIROSWEET Inhibitor program can control biogenic sulfide production and significantly reduce total chemical treatment costs.

MAGNACIDE™ B Microbiocide

MAGNACIDE B Microbiocide has proven to be one of the most cost-effective biocides available to the oilfield. MAGNACIDE B Microbiocide is highly effective against all types of common oilfield bacteria, including sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), whose metabolic activity contributes to the generation of hazardous and corrosive H2S gas. SRB also contribute to solids generation through the production of biogenic FeS solids and result in bacterial corrosion throughout oilfield systems.

Our broad-spectrum microbiocide for bacteria treatment, MAGNACIDE™ B Microbiocide,
offers these advantages:

  • Unique ability to penetrate oil-wet biofilms and solids
  • Improves water clarification
  • Water soluble, can be transported through water injection systems
  • Biogenic H2S removal from sweet production gathering systems
  • Biodegradable product

MAGNATREAT™ M Sulfide Scavenger

MAGNATREAT M Sulfide Scavenger removes H2S and dissolves iron sulfide (FeS) solids from your production and injection systems. Unlike acid, acrolein reacts irreversibly with sulfide, driving the iron back into solution. MAGNATREAT M Sulfide Scavenger can be used to:

  • Stimulate production and clean pumps, rods and production tubing in oil and gas wells
  • Restore injectivity and improve water quality in injection and disposal wells
  • Help eliminate FeS emulsion pads in topside equipment
  • Reduce maintenance requirements on pumps due to sticky, oil-coated, FeS solids

MAGNATREAT™ M Sulfide Scavenger offers these advantages:

  • Mitigates H2S from mixed production and source water
  • Minimizes solids deposits in tanks
  • Improves oil/water separation
  • Increases filter life
  • Helps control underdeposit corrosion
  • Biodegradable product
  • Manage condensate stabilizer systems

Reservoir Souring Control

Stop H2S at the Source!

Biogenic hydrogen sulfide formation is a common problem in reservoir water flood operations. Baker Hughes offers a product that is formulated to keep sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) populations in check. This product is not a biocide. Rather, it helps shift the balance of bacterial proliferation in favor of more benign organisms in order to limit H2S production within the reservoir. By limiting the amount of produced H2S, production operations are easier to manage and are safer.
