CASING/LINER DRILLING
Casing/Liner drilling has been successfully utilized around the world as an effective method of reducing the overall drilling costs by reducing potential non-productive time and minimizing risks and problems associated with conventional drilling. Casing/Liner drilling is the process of drilling or reaming down casing/liner to a predetermined depth utilizing a casing drilling/reamer bit such as EZCaseTM or EZReamTM respectively.
In Casing drilling the casing is rotated by the top drive, sometimes utilising a spear assembly to speed up connection times. Applications for casing drilling include:
- Conductor and surface casing setting
- Slim casing design wells
- Problematic formation
In Liner drilling the liner is run on drill pipe. Liner drilling can be performed with a retrievable BHA system, in which case a standard drill bit will be used. In most circumstances, no BHA is used and an EZCase bit is the appropriate choice. Applications for liner drilling include:
Depleted formations
Unstable formations
Loss zones
Pressure zones
Salt dome drilling
Moving/swelling formations
Excessive hole cavings
Liner drilling can be performed with a retrievable BHA system, in which case a standard drill bit will be used. In most circumstances, no BHA is used and an EZCase bit is the appropriate choice.
