D Technology

Consistent directional control
D Technology™ enhances steering performance so wear and tear on the BHA is reduced significantly. By balancing the bit’s face and lateral aggressiveness, these PDCs overcome the ever-increasing complexity of directional applications and tougher performance objectives. In motor steerable, rotary steerable, and vertical drilling applications, the D Technology total system solution delivers

  • consistent directional control
  • increased ROP
  • superior hole quality
  • improved tool life.

ROP increases 127%
Offshore Angola, a 12 1/4 in. HCD408Z drilled a tangent section while holding inclination at 58.5 deg and azimuth at 303 deg. This D Technology bit drilled a total of 799 m just under 27 hr, exceeding all directional and ROP objectives. On-bottom ROP of 30 m/hr compared with the offset interval of 13.2 m/hr.

ROP increases 44%

The Red Willow field, British Columbia, was perceived to be drillable only with roller cone bits because of the harsh interbedded siltstone, sandstone, shale, and some chert conglomerate. Ordinary PDCs generated too much reactive torque and vibration. An 8 3/4 in. HCD506Z and HCD506ZX replaced roller cone bits in three directional runs. D Technology average ROP increased 44% to 13 m/hr from 9 m/hr. Cost-per-meter decreased 27% to $188/m from $259/m.

Improved toolface control; better build rates
Patented EZSteer™ depth-of-cut-control technology optimizes toolface control on motor steerable systems and reduces torsional vibration on rotary steerable systems, enhancing system performance. LGC™ length, geometry, and cutter technology delivers predictable and consistent build rates without compromising hole quality.
