Overview - MPRTEQ Resistivity Processing

MPR™ provides services for difficult FE applications including:
  • Fractured, gas filled carbonate reservoirs
  • Extended Reservoir Navigation in complex geology
  • Horizontal bed boundary identification in thin and thick reservoirs
  • Rt in shallow and deep invasion
INTEQ was first to develop a commercial LWD process for inversion and array processing of data measured in wells up to 60 degrees of borehole inclination. A horizontal well version is currently in development.

MPRTEQ was developed to aid with the interpretation of MPR logs when simultaneously affected by different vertical resolutions, responses to invasion and variations in formation anisotropy and dielectric permittivity.

MPRTEQ uses 16 different raw data curves (8 raw phase measurements and 8 compensated phase difference and attenuation measurements).

It performs:
  • Inversion and resolution matching
  • Inversion processing for thin bed correction
  • Anisotropy processing for vertical and horizontal resistivity
  • Reduces 16 resolution matched curves to 4 curves each with a fixed Radial Depth of Investigation 10", 20", 35", 60" radius
MPR Fixed Depth of Investigation Measurements, North Sea

The log example shown above demonstrates both the improved measurement range and accuracy of the MPR tool and the robustness of MPRTEQ processing at high formation resistivities. This North Sea log was obtained in a nearly vertical well and drilled using an oilbase mud. The MPR data were acquired with a 4 ¾" probe-based MPR tool in a 6" hole. Four of the eight standard MPR resistivities are presented in Track 2, MPRTEQ resistivities in Track 3, and the multi-array wireline resistivities in Track 4.

Both the standard MPR and MPRTEQ resistivities show excellent agreement through the entire log despite the wide range of resistivities. Note the improved vertical resolution and resolution matching of the MPRTEQ resistivities in the more conductive zones and at the high resistivity bed boundaries. Also noteworthy is the breakdown of the multi-array wireline data in the high resistivity formation. In contrast, the MPRTEQ fixed-depth curves clearly define the reservoir's high resistivity profile.
