Overview - Reservoir Navigation Services

Reservoir Navigation is the process of utilizing any real-time data (in most cases, drilling and LWD data) to accurately position the wellbore relative to specific subsurface references and three-dimensional spatial coordinates.

The overall objective is to optimize placement of the wellbore relative to the reservoir and remaining within the physical constraints of the drilling and completion program.

Technology Overview

Baker Hughes INTEQ's Reservoir Navigation Service supplies a full range of reservoir navigation capabilities that meet the needs of any drilling project that requires precise placement of the wellbore relative to reservoir boundaries and/or subsurface geologic references. Our services specialize in accurate wellbore placement where geologic uncertainty is high.

Services range from high-end 3-D geologic modeling, visualization and well planning to resistivity forward response modeling and wellsite supervision. The key tools used by our Reservoir Navigation Supervisors are ILEM (Interactive Log Evaluation and Modeling software) and earthVision 3-D Geologic modeling software.

This service is typically used in combination with Baker Hughes INTEQ's advanced drilling systems and integrated BHA's for drilling complex horizontal and extended reach wells. This comprehensive service uses proven methodologies and technologies that permit the driller to minimize the risk of a poorly delivered wellbore.

Value
  • Lowers uncertainty and minimizes risk - Every project carries with it some degree of risk and geologic uncertainty. Geologic uncertainty is lowered as real-time data from our suite of downhole tools updates knowledge of the reservoir. The reservoir navigation supervisor on location uses the real-time information to revise the resistivity forward response models that updates the position of the wellbore relative to critical reservoir boundaries. This allows the driller to minimize risk by fine tuning wellbore placement as drilling progresses.
  • Improvises the drilling process - Real-time data acquisition combined with a comprehensive reservoir navigation toolbox facilitates better decision making during the drilling process. The reservoir navigation supervisor feeds the driller with accurate wellbore positioning information that allows him to improvise and incrementally change the course of the well as required to optimize placement of the wellbore relative to critical reservoir boundaries.
  • Lowers cost - Ultimately, our Reservoir Navigation services work to lower overall costs on a particular project. This is accomplished largely through accurate wellbore placement. No extra time is spent making unecessary corrections to poorly navigated wellbores. The high doglegs commonly associated with large course corrections can introduce a whole set of new problems such as completion string re-design, production and/or fluid flow inefficiencies, and overall poor borehole quality.

Service Application

Baker Hughes INTEQ's Reservoir Navigation Service has been used by most major clients and is offered anywhere Baker Hughes INTEQ Drilling and Evaluation Systems are provided. Key markets where the service is currently being utilized include North America (the Gulf of Mexico, mid-continent, Canada), the North Sea (U.K., Norway, The Netherlands), Mediterranean, North Africa, Sub-Sahara Africa, Far East and Latin America.
